World Mental Health Day 2026: Every student has a story beyond their resume
Being heard, finding connection, and taking one small step can shape how students experience college - and what comes next.

The part we don’t always see
A student can have good grades, a full calendar, and an impressive LinkedIn profile- and still be figuring out where they belong.
Moving away from home. Making new friends. Choosing a career. Learning to manage money. Wondering whether the path they’re on actually feels like theirs.
"When I moved to the US for my MBA, I brought ambition and big dreams. Finding my footing took more than a plan. That experience became part of the reason I started ShineQuo." - Deepanshi Bansal, Founder & CEO at ShineQuo.
Sometimes, the conversation we need begins with a simple question: “What has this experience been like for you?”
Real voices deserve room
This year’s World Mental Health Day theme, set by the World Federation for Mental Health, is “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change.”
For those of us working with students, it’s an invitation to listen to the stories behind the milestones.
What does success mean to them? What makes it easier to reach out? Where do they feel welcome enough to be themselves?
Listening becomes meaningful when what students share influences what we do next.
Why belonging matters
A 2023 study published in Science, involving 26,911 students across 22 colleges and universities, found that a brief belonging exercise improved first-year full-time completion for some student groups - but only where their campus offered genuine opportunities to belong.
That finding offers a practical reminder: reassuring someone that they belong needs to be backed by places, relationships, and opportunities where they can experience it.
We see examples in ShineQuo’s case study. One graduate student described how talking with someone helped them prioritize and adjust their life around what mattered most.
The report also records 70% utilization outside office hours - a reminder to make space for conversations at times that fit students’ lives.
From being heard to moving forward
At ShineQuo, we bring together anonymous peer connection, coaching, and practical resources to support student growth.
A peer conversation offers room to share experiences. Coaching creates time to explore strengths, clarify priorities, and choose a next step. Practical resources help turn that intention into something doable.
That step might be reaching out to a classmate, exploring a career interest, or building a routine that makes a new place feel more like home.
Students deserve space to grow while they’re still figuring things out.
A small invitation for today
Ask someone: “What’s one thing you wish people understood about your experience?”
Then give them time to answer.
For educators and student leaders, take it one step further: ask what could change because of what you heard.
Real voices can help us build more thoughtful communities. The work begins with listening and continues with action.
