Are You Not Getting Interview Calls? Here's Why!

As we review dozens of student applications at ShineQuo, we realized there’s a clear gap between what students are submitting and what employers actually look for. We understand that everyone is still learning, but it’s important to know how to present yourself well in a competitive market. Isn't it? Just think if you would hire yourself for that role?

In this post, we’ll break down some common mistakes students make when applying for internships or jobs and offer action steps to help you stand out.

1. Always Attach Your Resume – It’s Not Optional

It sounds basic, but many students forget to upload their resume while applying on platforms like LinkedIn, Handshake, or company websites. This one miss can cost you the opportunity - even if your background is great. Before submitting your application, double-check: Is your resume attached? Is the version up to date?

Make a checklist for every job application. Include "Resume attached?" as the first item.

2. Chronological Order Matters

Employers want to see your most recent and relevant experiences first. Jumping back and forth in time makes your resume hard to follow. Always list roles starting from the most recent, and make sure the dates are clear.

Review your resume layout. Arrange roles and projects in reverse chronological order - latest first.

3. Don’t Apply to Every Role in One Company (specially startups)

Applying to five different roles at the same organization - especially when they’re unrelated - shows a lack of focus. HR often sees all applications tied to one candidate, so it can hurt your credibility.

Choose one or two roles that align best with your skills and interests. Tailor your resume and cover letter accordingly.

4. AI is Growing - So Show Your Uniqueness

With AI handling more basic tasks, companies are looking for people who bring something different. You don’t need to know everything, but you need to be great at at least one thing.

Pick one core strength - whether it's content writing, user research, Canva design, or data analysis - and showcase it clearly in your resume and portfolio.

5. Your Cover Letter or Summary Shouldn’t Say “I Want to Explore”

Companies aren’t looking for people to "explore" or "try things out." They want individuals who have already started learning and can show initiative. Thanks to freelancing, side projects, online courses, and student organizations - gaining experience today is easier than ever.

Instead of saying you want to explore, say what you’ve already done and why you now want to grow further in that space with their company.

6. Why Do You Care About This Company?

Don’t just say, "I need a job." Everyone does. Instead, tell them why this company stands out to you. What about their work, mission, or team resonates with you?

Read the company’s website, mission, and past work. Mention something specific in your application and link it to your personal goals.

Being a student in 2025 comes with both challenges and opportunities. Yes, there’s competition, but there’s also access. You don’t have to be perfect, but you do have to be intentional. Start now. Polish your resume, build one strong skill, and tell your story with clarity.

If you're applying to ShineQuo or any other early-stage startup, remember: we’re not looking for perfection - we’re looking for passion, initiative, and at least short term clarity.
